Today's Table and Being an Artist

Continuing to work on my super secret project (can't wait to tell you what I'm working on, but it'll probably be a while yet), doing some extra special Tiny Raggedies for Jen over at Earth Angels, and painting wee little baby faces on wooden leaves. Have I mentioned that I love my job?

This pair is already on their way to London, but I managed to snap a picture of them before their journey. This particular goat's coloring was a special request, and I love that kind of request. I love getting to see what our stuff looks like in new colorways.

And speaking of new colors, there's only one elephant left but I'm not ready to give up on this elephant pattern yet, so I'll soon be doing some sort of variation for a future incarnation. What color should the next one be? Should it be naked or dressed? Formal or casual? These are the kind of silly questions I get to concern myself with. No matters of life and death (yet another reason why I love my job).
Sometimes I imagine myself doing something else with my life. Something more serious. More important. But then I remind myself that the world needs its artists. I can't imagine my own life devoid of art's influence-- no music, no stories, no adornment, nothing that exists just for the joy of its own existence. . . It would be a pretty lame world.

  4. Love this post and always love your work. The world would indeed be lame without art and artists and things that exist simply for joy. Made me think of this quote by Howard Thurman. "Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive."

  5. It would be a lame world indeed, and your art brightens it so much! (I love the quote in Michelle' comment too, so true).

  7. It shows in your art that you love your job! This would be a very boring world without creative minds that fill us with hope, smiles and awe.

  8. ...And might I add, the world would be lame without you Jo. :o)

...A blue elephant in clown clothes, how 'bout that? ;o)

...It's funny, how we all have our so called, "calling". I started out making country prim' craftsy dolls, then went to animals, then got caught up in my love of early textiles, then onto rug hooking and now I'm into teddy bears. As a matter of fact I'm taking apart an old fur coat to make into a bear. Sadly, I believe this to be a real fur coat and I abhor real fur coats but I am finding comfort that in whatever animal this coat is it will become something that someone will hold and love. Maybe the animal this fur belonged to will like that. :o)

    ...Enjoy your weekend!

    ...Blessings :o)

I'm a firm believer in returning discarded fur coats back into animals. Seems to give purpose to their sacrifice. Anywhooo-

Doing what we love is such a gift! Being an election year the elephant should not be retired yet. Perhaps a suited gentleman-ish elephant with a donkey mask for Halloween? Of course I always love a pink elephant.

  10. Oooooh, the suspense continues. Looks like it's coming along though, whatever it is for! No we need artists! It's serious business!!! Yeah, it's good that you create and I'm happy for it. Thank you. The elephant is adorable. I love his pink ears. I'm actually quite fond of pink elephants. I think you've made one before, right? The paper puppet, Ellie.

  12. Can't wait to see what the new, super secret project is! In the meantime, we'll all have to content ourselves with your usual creative genius, hehe. :)

And yep - the world need artists, now more than ever! Every once in a while (usually during times of financial stress) I consider getting a more conventional job. But the truth is, I'd be miserable. For all the uncertainty, this is what we were meant to do.

And look at all the people your work brings a smile to, every day! That's pretty great. :)
