We actually did it!!

We've been dreaming of this for so long! We bought ourselves an RV, and over the next 3 months we will be preparing to move into it full-time! In the meantime we'll be fixing it up, turning it into a mobile studio, and waiting for Boy Kid (soon to be College Boy) to graduate. We'll also be continuing to work on our arty stuff, of course. The first order of business is to do a major edit of all our possessions. What art supplies can I let go of, what is the bare minimum I need for maximum artiness? Can I live without my little collections for a few years? What are our very favorite art pieces that can fit on our new tiny walls? So many questions! In between our regularly scheduled shenanigans, we'll be sorting and purging and having garage sales. And painting and building and nesting. And reading lots and lots of stuff about living well in a tiny space. And learning all the techy stuff. And figuring out the nuts and bolts of RV life. Let the down-sizing commence!!

  2. How exciting! I've always wanted to do this but could never figure out how to keep my art stuff from completely taking over the living space. I'd love to see what you eventually do. Happy trails!

  3. Oh wow what an adventure for you!
    I envy you so much.
    I have my house up for sale ( but had no viewings yet) and had originally hoped to buy a mobile home here in Uk.
    But what we call a mobile home, isn't mobile, like your Rv's!
    Its a rectangular sited home basically and I had envisioned downsizing and living a more simple life.
    Mind you the grown children were very concerned at my spending £50,000 on a 'property' that devalues like cars do, maybe even more so.
    (And thus any inheritance maybe fritters away LOL)
    Then daughter married and is now 6 months pregnant and the two most local sites, for said mobile home to be sited on........aren't ideally placed for me to be a helpful part of her child rearing.
    So now Im in limbo .......but I envy you the opportunity!
    Mind you.....Id need an RV as well, for all my craft gear......perhaps I would never downsize quite enough to have fulfilled my own dream lol
    I wish you good luck and successful yard sales!!

  5. Oh! This is a dream of mine, too! I do hope you will blog all about it (the ups, the downs, all the stuff you learn along the way!) I've never traveled in an RV and don't know the first thing about all the technical stuff so this would be a learning experience for me too.
    Best of luck on your new adventure! How exciting!

  6. Very cool! I'm really looking forward to seeing how you adapt your creative work and living in your studio to the RV. Also, I bet that thing is going to look amazing by the time you're done with it.

    I'm picturing tiny collections of tiny things in tiny shadowboxes on the wall. :)

  9. This is what we are heading for but have to sell the house first...and in this market...not really happening. I think you will love it! I've been selling off my little collections and haven't had a twinge yet...OK that's not true! I have a favorite poem by Tom Hirons "BALLAST" stuck up on my magnet board...I thought it might speak to you, too...

    BALLAST by Tom Hirons

    Be very clear about this,
    If about nothing else:
    These things in boxes and bags
    And polythene wraps...
    They are not your life
    And they never were.
    Somehow,
    There arose in you
    A confusion;
    You mis-placed the world
    In these objects of desire
    Of memory and
    Obligation.
    But
    It is possible to walk away;
    It is difficult, but possible.
    It is discouraged, but it is possible.
    It is possible and, ultimately, essential
    To turn to these things and say:
    You are not me;
    You are not my life;
    You are not my home;
    You are not in my heart
    And you never were.
    And leave them all behind,
    Regaining your sanity
    At the expense of all the things
    You thought you owned,
    But were in the end simply ballast
    for the great being of your life,
    Until the time came
    When you were ready
    To spread your wings
    And fly.

  11. So the time is almost upon you. Congrates. This life style is interesting. We are now in our 8th year. We had a storage unit for a while for the things we just couldn't part with. Then we decided to purchase some property and build a garage to store those things in as the cost for storage was pretty high. Plus we now have a place to go and park. We had a well drilled and this summer septic system will be installed. So we will be pretty set. If I can answer any questions for you let me know girl.

  12. Congrats on your new RV! We've had an RV for quite a few years although we're not full-timers. My MIL has lived in a trailer full-time for over a decade and my grandparents have been full-time RVers for over two decades! They both love it and say that space is always an issue. My MIL has one of those rubbermaid storage sheds near her RV (it's parked) and my grandparents store some stuff at their old house and switch it out whenever they come back there for a few months. They're on-the-road RVers. My husband recommends this forum for all sorts of tips and advice on RV life. www.irv2.com

    Yes, the dreaded paring down of the art supplies. I'm having to do that too. I figure if it's not a very special supply or not a tool then I figure that I can always replace it later down the line if it turns out that I really needed it. Good luck!

  14. WOW, WOW, WOW! I can't tell you how thrilled I am for you & Dylan! Yes, the reduction of 'things' will be hard but once you do it, it won't take ANY time to forget all about what you had to release because you'll just be concentrating on what you've GAINED! Congratulations, Jo! Cannot think of two people more deserving of an achieved dream! LOVE YOU!

  15. Congratulations! We purchased a motorhome that needs a total remodel/rebuild. Maybe we will be on the road too. It will be an inspiring life, I'm sure. Storage is an issue - heavy stuff down low.
